Design for the actual loads

We assess the proposed span and the floor, wall or roof loads carried by the beam. Structural checks consider strength and serviceability, including deflection where relevant. We do not size a beam from a photograph or opening width alone.

Look beyond the steel member

A new beam can put concentrated loads onto existing masonry or foundations. Depending on the arrangement, the design may require padstones, posts, a frame, connection details or further investigation of the supports below.

Information for pricing and fabrication

Send existing and proposed plans, dimensions, photographs and any architectural requirements such as a flush ceiling or concealed beam. The agreed drawings identify members and details. Fabrication information and site dimensions must be coordinated by the responsible project team before steel is ordered.

Wall removal and installation

Design the permanent structure before removing a load-bearing wall. Temporary support and installation sequencing need appropriate planning by the appointed competent parties; they are not automatically included in a beam calculation. We can discuss any separate temporary works design requirement.
